Ecclesiastical Law

Our experienced partners will handle your case with confidentiality and discretion, to achieve the best possible outcome.

Ecclesiastical Law is defined as the set of legal rules that regulate the legal relationships of the Church. The subject of examination of Ecclesiastical Law traditionally consists of the framework of constitutional and legislative provisions that relate to religious freedom and the relations between the State and the Church.

The Church of Greece consists of two parts, the Autocephalous Church of Greece and the Metropolises of the Ecumenical Throne in the areas of the so-called «New Lands,» which continue to be under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but have been temporarily assigned for administration to the Autocephalous Church of Greece. However, there are also other ecclesiastical jurisdictions in Greece, such as the semi-autonomous Church of Crete, the self-governing area of Mount Athos, and the Dodecanese, which, even after its incorporation into Greece, continues to be ecclesiastically under the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Our law firm has expertise and experience in handling matters related to Ecclesiastical Law, and in collaboration with leading academics in the field, we can provide legal support on issues of religious criminal law, ecclesiastical courts, matters of inheritance succession of monks, issues of statutory organization and operation of holy monasteries and hermitages, as well as on matters of managing ecclesiastical/monastic property.
Additionally, our office undertakes legal support for other religions, the process of granting a license for the operation of a place of worship, as well as cases of violation of religious freedom.
